“Whoa, take ‘er easy there, Pilgrim.” Recently, I was watching a John Wayne marathon and thought, does the Duke have any good bourbon recipes?

After a quick Google search, I found, that not only does he have bourbon recipes, he has his own spirit line called, “DUKE.”

One cocktail that stood out was the Roughneck Colada. Please don’t judge me.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1.0 oz. Bourbon
  • 0.5 oz. Dark Rum
  • 0.5 oz. Lime Juice
  • 0.5 oz. Coconut Cream
  • 0.5 oz. Orange Juice
  • 1.0 oz. Pineapple Juice
  • 8-10 Mint Leaves
  • 0.5 oz. Fernet Branca
METHOD:
  1. Mix Bourbon, Rum, Lime Juice, Coconut, Orange, and Pineapple into shaker.
  2. Shake 1-6 times with ice.
  3. Roll mint and drop into an empty Collins glass.
  4. Top with crushed ice.
  5. Strain over Crushed Ice
  6. Top with Fernet Branca
REVIEW:

I can’t picture John Wayne drinking this cocktail, but he lived in California and that state is hot. Unlike a normal Pina Colada, the bourbon brings heat into the drink and not in a good way. That heat caught me off guard, and I could not get past it as it lingered way too long in my throat. I think with a little fewer mint leaves, it may have been tolerable, but I doubt it. This is one nasty hombre that I’m staying far away from…
