Blue Run Distilling brings us a unique Kentucky Straight High Rye Bourbon, out of Georgetown, KY. and will be the first distillery built in Scott County in nearly 50 years.   This small-batch whiskey is the first Blue Run product with Bourbon Hall of Famer Jim Rutledge serving as the contracted Master Distiller.

Blue Run High Rye Bourbon presents a rich, amber hue that hints at its depth and complexity. The liquid’s clarity and viscosity are evident when swirled in the glass, leaving slow-forming legs that suggest a robust and well-structured spirit at 111 Proof.  The bottle has the signature raised butterfly logo draped in a rainbow of colors.

The first whiff brings an instant aroma of caramel and vanilla, classic bourbon notes that are beautifully pronounced. Beneath these, there’s a subtle layer of spicy rye, complemented by hints of dark fruit—think dried cherries and figs. As it opens up, a touch of toasted oak and a faint whisper of pepper round out the aromatic profile.

On the palate, Blue Run High Rye Bourbon is a symphony of flavors. The initial taste is sweet and warm, with a smooth caramel and toffee sweetness that quickly gives way to the spiciness of the rye. This spice is well-balanced, never overwhelming, with notes of black pepper, cinnamon, and a hint of clove. There’s a pleasant oakiness that adds depth, along with a touch of dark chocolate and roasted nuts that linger on the tongue.

The finish is long, warm, and satisfying. The rye spice lingers, complemented by a gentle sweetness and a hint of oak tannins. There’s a final whisper of pepper and baking spices that leaves a memorable, inviting aftertaste.

Blue Run High Rye Bourbon has a bright future in the crowded field of high rye bourbons. Its balance of sweetness and spice, along with its complex flavor profile, makes it a must have for rye enthusiasts. For those who appreciate a bourbon that delivers both depth and smoothness, Blue Run High Rye is an excellent choice. As they finish their new facility in Scott County, KY, Blue Run Spirits promises many more innovative bourbons and no doubt, a bright future in the bourbon industry.

Cheers!
