CLERMONT, Ky. — Basil Hayden is putting a French twist on its signature Kentucky bourbon with the release of Basil Hayden Cognac Cask Reserve, a new limited-edition expression finished in French oak Cognac casks.
Announced Wednesday by Suntory Global Spirits, Cognac Cask Reserve maintains the familiar Basil Hayden high-rye mash bill and approachable 80-proof profile while introducing additional layers of dried fruit, caramel and oak from its secondary maturation.
What makes the release particularly interesting is the history of the finishing barrels. Basil Hayden says the specially selected French oak casks previously held Cognac exclusively for 20 to 25 years before being used to finish the Kentucky bourbon.
The result brings together two distinctly different spirits traditions — Kentucky bourbon and French Cognac — without moving too far away from the lighter, spice-driven profile that has long defined Basil Hayden.
According to the distillery, Cognac Cask Reserve opens with warm caramel sweetness and dried fruit, followed by the subtle spice, vanilla and oak associated with Basil Hayden.

The release is noteworthy for Basil Hayden because it represents another step beyond the traditional profile of the brand while retaining some of its most recognizable characteristics.
Basil Hayden traces its roots to Beam’s high-rye style of bourbon and has traditionally appealed to drinkers looking for a lighter, lower-proof introduction to Kentucky whiskey. Cognac Cask Reserve keeps the proof at 80, or 40% alcohol by volume, rather than using the finishing process as an opportunity to push the whiskey into higher-proof territory.
Instead, the emphasis is on the influence of the French oak and the Cognac previously matured inside the barrels.
Finishing bourbon in barrels previously used for wine and other spirits has become an increasingly important area of experimentation across the American whiskey industry. Cognac casks can be particularly interesting because their residual fruit character and French oak influence can complement bourbon’s traditional caramel, vanilla and baking-spice flavors.
Basil Hayden describes Cognac Cask Reserve as the first expression in its portfolio designed to use the brand’s high-rye bourbon profile as a foundation for exploring flavors from other parts of the world.
For bourbon drinkers, the combination of a 20- to 25-year Cognac cask history and a suggested retail price of $49.99 could make Cognac Cask Reserve an intriguing bottle to seek out, particularly for fans of finished whiskey who prefer lower-proof pours.
The company recommends drinking the bourbon neat or over ice, as well as using it in sparkling bourbon cocktails such as a Basil Hayden 75 or Sparkling Bourbon Sidecar.
